Can Two Wheelchair Passengers Travel in the Same Vehicle?

Travelling with another wheelchair user? Here’s what our team needs to check before arranging one vehicle for both passengers.

A couple heading to lunch, two friends visiting family, or residents travelling from the same care home may want to share a vehicle. When both passengers use wheelchairs, the first step is checking whether one vehicle can accommodate them both. Here are four questions to ask before booking wheelchair transport in Sydney.

Can two wheelchair passengers travel in one vehicle?

It may be possible, depending on the available vehicle and both passengers’ wheelchairs. Tell the booking team from the start that two people will be travelling in their wheelchairs. A large van does not automatically have space for two occupied wheelchairs. The team needs to confirm a suitable wheelchair position for each passenger, along with room for boarding and any accompanying people. Ask for this arrangement to be confirmed before you book.

What details do you need about each wheelchair?

Provide the details separately, even if the wheelchairs look similar. Tell us whether each chair is manual or powered, its make and model if known, and any attachments that add to its size. For example: “One passenger uses a manual wheelchair, and the other uses a powered chair with extended leg rests.” Our team may ask for measurements, weight details or photographs to check vehicle suitability. You can also read our guide on measuring a wheelchair for transport.

Will there still be room for carers and bags?

That needs checking with the two wheelchair spaces included. Don’t rely on the vehicle’s usual passenger-seat count. Tell us exactly who is coming and what you’re bringing. “Two wheelchair passengers, two support workers and two small bags” gives us a clear starting point. Mention walkers, larger luggage or other equipment as well. If someone joins the trip later, contact the team before pickup so the seating can be checked again.

What should we confirm about pickup and the return trip?

Provide both pickup addresses if the passengers are leaving from different places. Mention anything that could affect vehicle access, such as a narrow driveway, a steep entrance or a designated collection point. For the return, confirm whether both passengers and their companions are travelling back together. If the finish time is uncertain, ask how collection should be arranged rather than assuming the vehicle will wait. To discuss wheelchair accessible transport in Sydney, call 02 9669 9390. Let us know that two wheelchair passengers are travelling, and we’ll check suitability and availability before confirming the booking.
